Beaver County Treasurer Sandie Egley sent out the county’s tax bills last month, her first since being elected into the position. The bills continue a policy of former treasurer Connie Javens that Egley had vowed end, and now two courthouse employees tell BeaverCountian.com that “taxpayer dollars” are ending up on “someone’s coffee table.”
During Egley’s tenure as county commissioner, a position she held before running for treasurer, Egley had been critical of Javens’ practice of printing her own name on the tax bills. The bills required taxpayers to make their checks payable to “Connie Javens”.
Egley called the practice a campaign tactic, an effort by Javens to brand her name using taxpayer resources to aid reelection efforts. Javens was elected to treasurer seven times, serving 28 years in the position before retiring at age 82.
